Saputo Stadium
All over the world, major sports stadiums have become emblematic landmarks for the cities in which they are located. The city of Montreal has a rich history in this respect, and having contributed to the delivery of one of Montreal’s most prestigious stadiums is certainly one of Cordero’s most impressive accomplishments. The history of Saputo Stadium was built in two major phases, in which our allies, the laborers and carpenters, played a part.
The first phase of Saputo Stadium’s construction represented a major challenge. With the inaugural match scheduled for May 21, 2008, the site had to move ahead at top speed. The project was a major one: to convert this former outdoor track and field facility from the 1976 Olympics into a soccer stadium capable of welcoming the Montreal Impact and its 13,034 fans. From the first concrete forms to the installation of the last bench, multiple Cordero teams worked tirelessly in shifts day and night to drive the project forward and support the builder on site.
“We literally built a human chain to bring in and set up the rows of benches in the stadium!”
Nearly four years later, the second phase was written as the Montreal Impact moved to MLS and became CF Montreal. New league, new requirements, same alliance between the builder and our allies to deliver, on June 16, 2012 a stadium that now accommodates over 20,000 fans.
“Our workers are so proud of this project! It embodies what we’re all about; valiant, determined, proud, so proud that we still remember where the last bench was installed.”
Every night of a sporting event, the stadium welcomes talented teams determined to win, and we like to think it’s partly because, from the outset, it was due to the builder’s and our teams, determined passion to deliver, successfully kicked off the project.
